In September this guide had four stays, because we wouldn’t pad it with a maybe. This month it has five: the Hampton Inn now has a clear pet policy on Hilton’s page, and the Best Western’s own page finally lists its numbers.
Cottonwood earns the trip. It sits beside the Verde River, about 100 miles north of the Phoenix area, at elevations from 3,300 to 3,900 feet, according to the City of Cottonwood (opens in a new tab). That’s not Flagstaff cool, but it’s meaningfully off the Valley floor, and it puts you within easy reach of Sedona, Clarkdale, Jerome, and a state park with a river running through it. Old Town Main Street is walkable, shaded in stretches, and full of shops that don’t flinch at a leash.
The Tavern Hotel: the Dog Cottage
904 N. Main Street, in Old Town. (928) 639-1669.
The Tavern Hotel keeps dogs to two spaces, the Dog Cottage and the Dog Suite. Its policies page says “No pets allowed in standard rooms and pet-free cottages,” and pets aren’t allowed in the pool area (The Tavern Hotel (opens in a new tab)). So you aren’t sharing a hallway with barking, and if both are booked, there’s no third option.
- The room: 200 square feet for two people “with their furry little friend,” with a private, fenced-in yard (Tavern Dog Cottage (opens in a new tab)).
- The rule: pets are kept in a kennel or crate if left alone in the room.
- The extras: pup-inspired decor and a welcome gift for your dog.
- What to check: the fee and the number of dogs aren’t stated. Ask both when you call.
The Tavern Hotel: the Dog Suite
Same address, bigger room: 450 square feet, designed for two guests and up to two dogs, with pets kept in a kennel or crate if left alone (The Dog Suite (opens in a new tab)). Pup-inspired decor and a welcome gift for your dog. Doug approves of any hotel that hands him something at check-in.
What changed: in September this page said both “up to two dogs” and “No pets allowed.” In October it reads clearly: the no-pets line applies to standard rooms and pet-free cottages. The fee and any weight limit still aren’t stated, so ask when you call.
Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton Cottonwood: the clearest numbers
650 West Mingus Avenue. (928) 496-1001.
- Policy: pets allowed, up to 50 pounds (Hilton (opens in a new tab)).
- Fee: $75 for 1 to 4 nights, $125 for longer stays.
- What to check: the page doesn’t say how many pets per room.
The clearest written policy in town, which makes it the easy pick for a dog under 50 pounds.
Best Western Cottonwood Inn: now with numbers
993 S. Main Street. Best Western’s own page now spells it out: “We are Pet Friendly and allow up to two dogs in a limited number of rooms. The size limit for any one dog shall be 80 pounds” (Best Western (opens in a new tab)).
- Fee: $30 per day.
- Other pets: cats and other pets need the hotel’s approval before arrival.
- Also: complimentary full hot breakfast and a heated outdoor pool.
- What to check: pet rooms are limited, so ask for one when you book.
What changed: in September the official page said only “pet-friendly rooms.” It now lists the number of dogs, the weight limit, and the fee.
Lux Verde Hotel: call first
301 West SR 89-A. We couldn’t find a pet policy on the hotel’s own booking pages. BringFido, a listing site, shows $25 per pet per night plus a $25 refundable deposit, up to two pets, up to 75 pounds, pet-friendly rooms only, and no leaving pets unattended (BringFido (opens in a new tab)).
That’s a listing site, not the hotel. Call and ask three questions: fee, deposit, weight cap.
Why isn’t the Iron Horse Inn on the list?
In September we couldn’t tell, because listing sites contradicted each other. The inn’s own website now settles it: “No Pets Allowed” (Iron Horse Inn (opens in a new tab)). Good to know before you fall for the location.
A shaded patio with wine on it
DA Vines Vineyard Wines & Bistro, 705 N. Main Street, Suite A, in Old Town. (928) 634-6710. Their own site invites you to “hang out on our shaded, dog-friendly patio” (DA Vines Vineyard (opens in a new tab)), which is exactly the language you want from a source. Hours: Monday to Saturday 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In nearby Clarkdale, Chateau Tumbleweed, 1151 AZ-89A, (928) 634-0443, invites you to “enjoy sweeping views of the Verde Valley from our dog-friendly patio” (Chateau Tumbleweed (opens in a new tab)). Its site doesn’t list tasting room hours, so call ahead.
Dead Horse Ranch State Park: the morning walk
This is why you stay in Cottonwood instead of Sedona: river trails, and a fraction of the crowd.
The rules, from the park’s own page: “Pets must be kept on a leash and may not be left unattended. Please clean up after your pet. Pets are not permitted in park buildings” (Arizona State Parks (opens in a new tab)). The state’s park rules set the leash at six feet or shorter in every Arizona state park (Arizona State Parks rules (opens in a new tab)). The park store is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except December 25. Gate hours aren’t on that page, so call the park if you’re planning a sunrise start.
And carry all the water your dog will need. We couldn’t confirm water for dogs on the trails, so assume there is none.
The two-town play
Here’s how we’d use Cottonwood: basecamp Friday night, Dead Horse Ranch early Saturday before the heat, Old Town’s antique row mid-morning while the shops are cool and quiet, a long afternoon nap, the DA Vines patio at five. Sunday, drive up to Jerome or over to Clarkdale, then home.
If you want more elevation for the same kind of weekend, Prescott sits at about 5,200 feet. And even at 3,500 feet in July, run the pavement test before every walk. Verde Valley asphalt still bakes.
Policies change. Call ahead to confirm your dog’s size, the number of dogs, indoor versus patio access, and the full cost.
Five stays. Call each one before you book. Want the car sorted too? Thrive Vibes can help with that. (opens in a new tab)
